Seattle Mariners 2012 Schedule: May Games

In the Seattle Mariners 2012 schedule, there are 29 games in the month of May. That’s 29 games in the first 30 days alone, taking the Mariners to the East Coast and back again. The team has 16 road games and 13 home games, with a huge seven-game homestand against the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels taking place in the fourth week of May. It’s definitely an important month for the American League West standings and could dictate if the Mariners are contenders or sellers heading towards the trading deadline.

Mariners Might Have Real Shot at Yu Darvish: A…

New information about Yu Darvish came out on Tuesday (Dec. 13), possibly indicating that the Seattle Mariners could have a good shot at signing him. Darvish is a Janese pitcher that could soon sign with a Major League team this season. He posted an 18-6 record with a 1.44 ERA last season with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters.

Posting bids on Darvish are due by 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday (Dec. 14) and it is at that point where the winning bid will get announced. The team that put up the highest posting bid will then have an exclusive negotiating window to get Darvish to agree to a contract. Earlier in the process it had seemed like the Texas Rangers were the team getting closest to signing Darvish, but they certainly don’t count as a West Coast team, no matter how many times ESPN wants to claim that.

Is it the case that Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik was referring to Darvish when he stated he was chasing a veteran starting pitcher? It’s certainly interesting to think about how nice a pitcher like Darvish would fit behind Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda in the starting rotation, but there is the over-reaching problem that this signing doesn’t address. By signing Darvish, the Mariners are doing nothing to fix the offense that came in as the worst in Major League Baseball during the 2010 season. That could really rub Mariners fans the wrong way, even if Darvish is a great pick-up this offseason.

Could the Mariners really pull off a scoop of the Rangers? That’s a nice momentum swing if it’s true, even if the franchise will have to make more moves this offseason to fix the holes in the offense. It could also seem like a move of desperation, especially if the club offered Prince Fielder a contract and already got re-buffed. Despite being this far into the offseason, the only hole that the Mariners have really filled is the backup catcher. There are still questions about finding power, who will play third base, who will play left field and how the Mariners are going to score more runs in 2012.

Darvish would certainly seem like a nice addition to the team, but only if there are more moves coming.

Nov 27, 2011 – The Tampa Bay Rays have traded catcher John Jaso to the Seattle Mariners for right handed reliever Josh Lueke. The reliever comes to Tampa from Seattle with a 6.06 ERA and 1-1 record in 25 games last year for the Mariners. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times first broke the news. Topkin also tweeted a quote from the Rays Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, Andrew Friedman, who talked about what Lueke can bring to the club in 2012.

Rays Friedman on Lueke: “Josh has the stuff to get hitters out in the AL East and began to show that during 2nd half of last season.”

Lueke does have a criminal incident in his recent past revolving around a report that surfaced when he was traded to Seattle from Texas as part of the Cliff Lee deal. Lueke initially faced charges of re but agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of false imprisonment with violence. Topkin also tweeted that Friedman stated the Rays were aware of the incident and had done their due diligence on his background and character.

“We’re satisfied that he is going to be the kind of person and teammate that we look for and we expect him to contribute positively to our group.”

Pineda, Mariners take on visiting Blue Jays

(Sports Network) – Michael Pineda tries to pitch the Seattle Mariners to their
third straight win this evening when they open a three-game series with the
Toronto Blue Jays at Safeco Field.

Pineda has been one of the top rookies in the American League this season,
going 9-7 with a 3.57 earned run average for the dispointing Mariners, who
have stated that they will try and limit his innings from here on out. The
young right-hander did not get a decision against the Texas Rangers last
Tuesday, as he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings of a 7-6 loss.

In two starts against the Blue Jays this season Pineda is 1-0 with a 3.95 ERA.

Seattle played spoiler this weekend, as it took the final two games of its
three-game series with the Boston Red Sox. On Sunday, Casper Wells hit a solo
homer, Charlie Furbush pitched seven strong innings and the Mariners beat the
Red Sox, 5-3.

Ichiro Suzuki collected two hits and scored a run for the Mariners and Mike
Carp had an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest
for a Seattle rookie since Ichiro in 2001.

Furbush (3-4) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out
six and improved to 2-1 in four pearances since being acquired from Detroit
last month.

“I’ve faced these guys before, so I kind of had a few things I wanted to stick
to in certain situations, with certain counts with certain hitters,” said
Furbush. “The changeup, curveball and slider all seemed to be pretty effective
today.”

Toronto, meanwhile, also won the final two games in their three-game set with
the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, winning Sunday’s finale in thrilling
fashion, as Edwin Encarnacion delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 10th
inning to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-4 victory.

The Blue Jays had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on back-to-back
doubles by Colby Rasmus and Brett Lawrie, who also played defensive hero a
half-inning earlier when he caught the Angels in a double rundown.

“They’re a good team and they hit some pitches. That’s baseball. That’s the
way it is,” said Angels reliever Scott Downs, who pitched an inning.

Encarnacion was 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Jon Rauch (5-3) pitched a perfect top of the 10th for the win, throwing seven
of his nine pitches for strikes.

Heading to the hill for the Jays tonight will be righty Henderson Alvarez, who
will be making his second big league start. Alvarez did not get a decision
against Oakland on Wednesday and allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3
innings.

Toronto has won its last four against the Mariners after losing the first two
to them this season.

Griffey Deserved at Least One World Series Ring: A…

Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) of the Seattle Mariners was in Texas on October 24 to receive the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award. Junior has made good on his promise to quietly walk away from the game of baseball, and few have seen him outside of some consulting for the M’s. Selfishly, I wanted Griffey to win a ring during his career because I have been a fan of the team since they started in Seattle. However, I also wanted Griffey to win a ring because I think he deserved at least one.

A class act

Junior certainly had some interesting moments with the franchise throughout the years, and at times there were issues with contracts, lineups and direction. His enthusiasm for the game, monster home runs, acrobatic catches, backwards hat and big smile made him a fan favorite since day one. Overall, Griffey was a class act, and the fact that he quietly exited the game showed that he was able to put things into perspective. Many superstars have hung on way too long, but Junior recognized that his time was done and he tactfully faded into the background.

So close, yet so far

Throughout his career, Griffey had a few chances to get a ring. The 1994 season saw a surging Mariners team get halted by a work stoppage. 1995 was a year of destiny, and the M’s came extremely close to the World Series. 2000 and 2001 were highly successful years for Seattle, but unfortunately Griffey had been moved to the Cincinnati Reds and was not able to enjoy the Mariners success of 2001. By the time Griffey returned to Seattle, the Mariners were deep in a rebuilding phase.

Someday?

Maybe Griffey will get a ring someday. Perhs he will coach, manage or maintain a consulting role that will get him more involved in the process of building a team. For now, he pears to be living a quiet life away from baseball, and according to him he has no regrets. He may not have any regrets, but plenty of fans wish he could have won a ring. Eventually Griffey will be in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, and he should go in as a Mariner. That will be another proud moment for Seattle fans.
