Mariners closer David Aardsma will have hip surgery Monday, according to The Seattle Times.
The righthander, who was mentioned in trade rumors earlier this week and throughout the offseason, will have a procedure to repair the labrum in his left hip after a problem was discovered a few weeks ago. Aardsma was shut down at the end of the 2010 season with what the team diagnosed as an oblique injury, but it turns out the hip actually was the root of the problem. “When I started doing my throwing program, it became clear to me that it wasn’t an oblique,” Aardsma told The Times. “If it was an oblique, it would have gone away on its own.” Aardsma, who was 0-6 with a 3.44 ERA and 31 saves this past season, said he should be able to throw four weeks after surgery and is hopeful he will be ready to pitch opening day. “I know I’ll be throwing by (spring training), which is a good thing,” he said. “It’s not like I’m a starter and I need the whole spring to build up innings. We have some time here, so that even if there is a setback or something, I could still make it to opening day on time.” Prior to the injury, there was talk that Aardsma would be dealt, as Seattle feared he could earn up to $4.5 million next season after arbitration.
